The National Tsunami Warning Centre has upgraded the Tsunami Watch to a Tsunami ADVISORY. A Tsunami Advisory is the second highest level of tsunami alert. Advisories are issued due to the threat of a tsunami that has the potential to produce strong currents dangerous to those in or near the water. THE ONLY DANGER IS TO PEOPLE AT OR IMMEDIATELY NEAR THE WATER (MEANING AT OR BELOW HIGH TIDE MARK). Significant inundation (flooding) is not expected for areas under an Advisory but the following coastal zones may be at risk due to strong currents.
• north coast and Haida Gwaii
• the central coast and northeast Vancouver Island
• the outer west coast of Vancouver Island
• and the Juan de Fuca Strait coast
More information will be released as it becomes available from the NTWC. Emergency personnel are monitoring the situation. The Tsunami Watch was triggered due to an 8.7-magnitude earthquake that occurred 80 miles southeast of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka, Russia.
